Best Practice Framework for the management of marine litter from recreational fishing
Client: Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI)
Project Dates:
September 2024
- August 2026
Project objectives:
Whilst the drivers for, and quantity of, marine litter from commercial fisheries and aquaculture are now reasonably well known, there is very little informaiton on these for recreational (or sports) fisheries. This work has pioneered efforts to start understanding the main sources of marine litter from reeacreational fisheries, the reasons why they are lost and thier likely impacts on the enviornment, both short and long-term. Based on this, a 'Best Practice Framework' for the management of marine litter from recreational fisheres was developed. It is acknowledged that there are still major informaiton gaps and it is hoped that this intiative will kick-start efforts to fill these.
