Required steps by WTO members for implementation of a possible WTO agreement on fisheries subsidies
Client: IISD
Project Dates:
November 2019
- February 2020
Project objectives:
In expectation of a possible WTO agreement on fisheries subsidies rules, the objective of this contract was the production of a short issue paper setting out the key steps WTO members may need (or want) to take in the implementation of a WTO agreement on fisheries subsidies, including commentaries to explain the context of current fisheries management systems and what governments might need to think about. The possible steps related to subsidies disciplines focussed on IUU fishing, overfished stocks, and overcapacity. The paper highlighted possible sources of technical assistance that might be available to countries in need to support to identify and take necessary steps.
