Economic and environmental costs of Ghost Fishing

Project objectives:
Assessment of the environmental, social and economic impacts of ghost fishing in selected problems fisheries and specification of mitigating measures following consultation with, and participation by, industry groups. Project conducted in association with Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP).

Poseidon services provided:
Poseidon conducted work on two particular aspects of this study:
  • Cost-benefits of different gear recovery approaches
  • Environmental impact of ghost fishing, both on marine life directly as well as the habitat itself.
