Development of aquaculture regulations

Client: Aquaculture Department, Ministry of Agriculture
Project Dates: June 2012 - December 2012

Project objectives:
Aquaculture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is set to expand rapidly, with the continued growth of coastal shrimp farming and major anticipated expansion into marine cage fish culture. The current laws and processes are recognized to be inadequate to ensure an orderly and sustainable expansion of coastal and marine aquaculture in particular. As a result, the Government requested Poseidon and the Globe Law Group to undertake an evaluation of the current aquaculture-related legislation and to produce a modern legal framework governing aquaculture development in the Kingdom.

Poseidon services provided:
Poseidon provided the institutional and technical advice to this study. In particular, they focused on developing processes to ensure the environmental sustainability of aquaculture development. This included the drafting of three Technical Protocols, providing the detailed licensing pathway for the different forms of aquaculture being practiced in the Kingdom.
