Shrimp Action Plan

Client: Department for International Development DFID
Project Dates: June 2002 - September 2002

Project objectives:
DFID supported the Bangladesh Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries (MoFL) to develop a strategy for wild shrimp post larvae collection that reduces biodiversity impacts yet recognises the livelihood dependencies that have evolved around this activity. This Plan was presented to MoFL in November 2002 and is being developed into a shrimp sector strategy study.

Poseidon services provided:
Two studies have been undertaken by Poseidon as part of this Action Plan:

A scoping study for the certification of shrimp aquaculture that provides a strategy for post larvae quality certification and investigates options for the adoption of codes of conduct for shrimp growers. The value-adding potential through international certified organic shrimp production is also examined.

The second study looks at the policy environment and provides a policy development approach that reflects the emerging sustainable production and livelihood protection priorities in the shrimp farming industry.
